Painting Holiday with Steve Bretel

From Sketch to Success

20th - 27th October 2020 - more than 4 places available

Course Information

Historic Montelparo and the stunning local scenery of Le Marche will be our inspiration, and the perfect setting in which to develop our skills in watercolour, line & wash, acrylic and mixed media to capture the unique moods and atmosphere of this wonderful location. We will also work in the studio covering sound drawing skills, perspective, composition, tonal range and colour mixing, progressing from previous results, working from new references, or practicing techniques for use on the following day’s excursion. You will also be encouraged to use a small sketchbook regularly throughout your stay - quick mark making at breakfast is a great way to tune in your creative mind for the day ahead! When out and about, paintings will begin in a loose, free style that establish the basic elements, along with a strong focal point that is formed with directional cues that guide the viewer on a visual journey, as the painting gradually develops in layers towards completion. Lots of drawing, lots of painting - lots of enjoyment! The programme and suggested outcomes will be discussed at the start, which will also allow for flexibility during your stay. Students will be supplied with a suggested kit list, and they can also bring along their preferred materials, such as pastel or oils, if they wish to.

Your Learning

Steve’s classes are fun, sociable and supportive for artists at all levels and stages of development, where each is encouraged to develop their own particular style and pace of working. He believes that understanding the needs of the learner is fundamental, and the key to success. His passion lies in developing the creative confidence and abilities of each person, and passing on skills through a mixture of demonstrations, with both group and individual instruction and positive feedback.

If you are arriving at a time that really doesn’t tie in with the group or arriving a day or so earlier we can arrange for a taxi to pick you up.   The cost of a taxi is in the region of €150.  If there is anybody else arriving doing the same we will arrange it so that you can share the transport costs.

Similarly for departure, for retreats the rooms are to be vacated by 10:00 on the morning of departure.  Departure time will be set based on the majority of the group.  Again we will do our very best to accommodate everyone.
